Captivating hill station located in Himachal Pradesh, Dalhousie came into existence in the year 1854 by the British, to serve as a summer retreat for them. The town derived its named from the then British Viceroy, Lord Dalhousie. Dalhousie is situated at a height of about 2080m. It is on the west side of the Dhauladhar mountainous range and is built in and around the 5 hills. Dalhousie serves as the gateway to the old hill state of Chamba, presently known as the Chamba District in Himachel Pradesh, India. The region is a storehouse of the ancient and rich Hindu art, culture, temples, and handicrafts. A municipal town, Dalhousie is a sought after tourist destination in the district of Chamba.

Dalhousie is located in the district of Chamba at an elevation of around 2,000 meters. The hill station is situated at the Western end of the Dhauladhar range of mountains. Surrounded by beautiful snow-capped mountains, Dalhousie is named after its founder Lord Dalhousie, the British Governor-General in India. With several Victorian-style mansions, Scottish architecture and other charming colonial buildings, this hill station will take you back in time. The place also has few quaint churches. Dalhousie is spread over an area of 14 sq km of area and it includes five hills, namely Balun, Bakrota, Tehra, Patreyn and Kathlog. The fragrant pines, oaks, rhododendron and oaks along with several other types of tress cover the slops of the mountains. This scenic hill station if framed by the river Ravi flowing at the base of the town. Dalhousie is a popular destination for honeymooners. Dalhousie also offers you the spectacular view of the majestic snow-capped Pir Panjal mountain range located in Jammu and Kashmir, Sach Pass and Chamba’s Pangi Valley. This enchanting hill station has several tourist spots like Lohali village, Kalatop, Dainkund peak, Bakrota hills and Tibetan market. The beautiful valley of Khajiar is also quite popular among the visitors.

How To Reach


By Air

The city does have an airport but tourists from different parts of the country can land at the airport Gaggal in Kangra to reach this hill station. The airport is approximately 135 km away from the heart of Dalhousie.

By Train

Nearest railhead is Pathankot (82 km) which is well-connected to various cities in India, Taxis can be found from outside the railway station to reach Dalhousie.

Shopping


The town has a number of local bazaars and centers, where one can shop for simple local souvenirs, woolen clothes and the every-day treasures. One can head to the Tibetan market, organized by Tibetans and the Gandhi Chowk or G.P.O, as it is popularly known. One might also want to visit the Sadar Bazaar here. The Tibetan Handicraft center sells some fine carpets and handicrafts though you might want to check with the locals about the timings for visitors.
